FRESHLY WHIPPED @ Keisuke’s 21st Manji day! 3/1/12

Getting an invite out to Keisuke’s day required an immediate Yes. Any day held by Kei brings out awesome cars and a true grassroots style day to enjoy. As it was Kei’s birthday, he was having a lot of fun in his little AE86 notch.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nArriving around 9:30, this little MX5 followed close after. Owned by Nick, it’s a crazy little car that truely shows mind over matter. With the common connotations of a MX5 being that of a ‘hairdressers car’ or not very manly, his Miata is truely showing a tougher side.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNot ones to muck around, the guys got straight out onto the track. With cones set up to create a figure 8 style pattern, this allowed for the drivers to steer their way around the course with some sense of direction.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nOne thing I can’t understand is how Kei drifts so well with the virtually stock AE86. He’s surely a damn good driver and really knows how to fling the car around. As you can see he left some nice tread-marks leading from the car. I hate to use a cliché, but he really does resemble Takumi from Initial D – that’s pretty cool in my books.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nBuddy ol’ pal Cam was out in the Sheep Shagga R32, putting out impressive runs as usual.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHe was also the first to rip a bumper off his car. Good stuff.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nBack in the pits, this Hachi seemed to be having a few problems and the owner sat back and watched the rest of the guys drift for the rest of the day. Must be one of the cleanest Hachi notchbacks in NZ.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAfter having a few quick lessons by Cam, Maria was out in her S14 Silvia powering through the corners and really showing what she has learnt.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis little MX5 was out to have some fun, regardless of the armco or  its randomly popping up headlights.  I want one.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIf this day taught me anything, it’s that I really want an MX5. The potential of these little cars is crazy.  With all of the drivers out putting on a great show, it really does show that power is only one aspect of drifting, but knowing and understanding your car is the largest – and most important.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI also made a video of the day. Just a quick little video, showing Cam out drifting and a few of the other drivers. Share it round!\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nOnce again, Happy Birthday to Kei and many more manji days to come, here’s hoping I have my own MX5 for the next one!\r\n\r\n-Chris
