FRESHLY WHIPPED AT HYPER DRIVE – PUKEKOHE RACEWAY 15/05/2011

Hyper Drive was the title sponsor of the latest NZ Track Day at Pukekohe Park Raceway. The day was a mixed bag weather wise, which meant drivers had to be cautious on the wet track. A reasonable number of drivers turned up with their prized possessions and a great day was had by all.

As all the drivers participating arrived at the track they were presented with these funky looking stickers to place on their cars.

The driver of this Supra was able to utilise the power of his 2JZ and put down some good lap times in the morning while the track was still dry.

With all 4 wheels putting power down onto the track, this Subaru was flying out of pit line and onto the front straight. Keeping this beast under control would require a lot of focus from the driver, who looks ready to set some great lap times.

And then the heavens opened up and made navigating the track very tricky. Kat Benson was piloting her Time Attack Evo on the side of caution.

The G35 is slightly different from your regular Skyline, running a V6 rather than an Inline 6. I found the Lamborghini inspired front bumper quiet interesting and rather liked it.

What looks like a photo finish is really just a well timed snap. For obvious reasons the BMW M3 was running faster lap times out of the two.

The Sileighty is always such an awesome car to look at. I cannot fault this car, from it’s two tone paint down to its S15 front. An all round stunner.

A R32 Skyline with a R34 front. Shall we call it an R32.4? Whatever you want to name it, there is no denying this is one fast machine. BUT….

It had to be parked up on the trailer early because it was recorded it at 95.8dB. The legal limit in NZ, 95. Sigh.

Hans Ruiterman, brother to D1NZ Drifter Carl was out in his 520kw Time Attack Silvia. An odd choice for a Time Attack weapon, but in this instance, a good one.

I might just be me, but the driver of this JZX90 has a very Stig like helmet. This JZX90 had a lovely paint job and amazing stance. One of Chris’s favourite cars from the day.

Here we have the 2nd of the two black Skylines. This one I was lucky enough to be taken for a blat in. Big thanks to Cam Vernon for letting me hop in the passenger’s seat for a few laps. God I love RWD Nissans on a wet track!

A lot of the drivers had been talking about how careful you needed to be over Ford Mountain in the wet. This is why. The Evo didn’t appear to have any major damage. All the best to the owner and getting it fixed.

Usually I’d get a little sick of seeing the same car weekend after weekend. Not in this case. Unfortunately fluro wheels are such a rare sight here in New Zealand.

Personally my favourite car of the day was this HSV GTS with its matte black vinyl and killer stance. Yes I’m a Holden fan.

As the day wore on, most people got sick of the temperamental weather and headed home but only after they had their fair share of excitement and track time for the day. Our friend Jacky from JTune headed off in this Evo.

\r\n

Great job NZ Track Day and Hyper Drive for keeping the spirit alive on such a dull day.
The next coming NZ Track Day at Pukekohe is on the 6th of June. Let’s hope for better weather next time around. See you all there.
