FRESHLY WHIPPED AT HAMPTON DOWNS: RALLY NZ HIGH OCTANE – GYMKHANA/TIME ATTACK/FORMULA 5000

Along with the Drifting from Part 1, there was also Time Attack action happening on track and Gymkhana X over on the skid pan. Both were very entertaining and featured some awesome cars.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the skid pan at Hampton, it is just a large single pour of concrete surrounded by concrete barriers. Lay some cones out in the middle and you have Gymkhana X.

Representing the Drifters in the Gymkhana X competition was Carl Ruiterman. There is no doubt that his car is very well suited to Drifting, however RWD cars with loads of power don’t go too well on the slippery conrete surface.

On the other hand Group B Audi Quattro S1 performed amazingly on such surfaces with it’s revolutionary 4WD systems. It was great to see such an iconic and rare car putting on an awesome driving performace for the crowd.

More Group B eye candy was tearing up the skid pan. A sight to be welcomed by all car enthusiasts.

The Time Attack class also had a fair share of cool cars on display. This Toyota Corolla AE86 with it’s screaming 4AGE engine was a favourite.

The driver of this Evo 7 was literally throwing his car into corners and giving it hell. Wasn’t surprised when he left early with car troubles. Great fun to watch though.

Some serious money has been spent on this Maserati. Not too fussed on the looks but the exhaust note is quite something.

For a car worth only the fraction of the Maserati, Jacky in the K20 DC2 Integra was keeping up fairly easily. That can be put down to the awesome work Jacky and his team at J-Tune have done with this car.

There were a handful of Formula 5000s racing around the track. I love the giant, iconic air scoop and ground shaking V8 rumble that are synonymous with this car.

Thought I’d leave this photo for last as I think it is a prime example of Kiwi enginuity and that great know how can do attitude we possess.Looks like a lot of fun for a small price.

This is the 2nd installment in our cover of High Octane at Hampton.

Last but not least is a round up of the cars were sitting around just looking good.
