FRESHLY WHIPPED @ MELBOURNE – FILM
So on my journey to Melbourne I decided that I’d shoot all of my walkabout shots on film. Sure I took a few digital ones here and there just in case, but I ended up taking 6 rolls of 36/24 exposure film. In doing so I took photos of stickers, food, graffiti and cars. Here’s some of my favorites. Do note this post isn’t solely about cars. If you want the main FD Asia post please view here.\r\nThis one’s more for the budding photographers out there.
\r\n
\r\n
Let’s start with a big one. Deep fried Mac n Cheese. Thanks TGIF Friday’s.
\r\n
\r\n
Chapel Street was a damn cool place. Much like that of High Street or Ponsonby but on a gigantic scale.
\r\n
\r\n
More food. Cakes over here were a whole other deal.
\r\n
\r\n
Graffiti was a prominent feature also. This is all over a giant old building in the centre of town. I do feel like they should put the place to use, but for now the art remains.
\r\n
\r\n
It seemed that it didn’t matter where I turned, the graffiti was quite literally everywhere. Every little alley way or dodgy corner was covered in some masterpieces.
\r\n
\r\n
This was one of my favourites, hidden down a little alley way.
\r\n
\r\n
Melbourne seemed to like incorporating food into the graffiti as well. Hot Dog life.
\r\n
\r\n
Or an angry donut.
\r\n
\r\n
A big shout out to the crew at Grill’d for their rad burgers. Not sure if they beat Big Jay’s in Mt Wellington though..
\r\n
\r\n
The central city was a rather peaceful place with a lot of trams out and about to help the masses get around.
\r\n
\r\n
Quite liked this Accord spotted chilling on the side of the road. Later saw it at the 100mm meet.
\r\n
\r\n
Parks and recreation.
\r\n
\r\n
Sticker slapping was alive and well around these parts too. Do love some good sticker slapping.
\r\n
\r\n
Buskers were getting their groove on.
\r\n
\r\n
As was the RS*R Drift team.
\r\n
\r\n
I eventually saw them a couple of days later again out at the media day for Formula Drift.
\r\n
\r\n
Having a few issues with the car, they were just trying to stabilize it for the main event. Trying to get it all sorted and fix any little issues that came their way. This is a brand new car after all.
\r\n
\r\n
The car went back into the tent for more issues to be ironed out throughout the day.
\r\n
\r\n
Daigo’s car was also giving the mechanical team troubles. Luckily they seemed to get rid of the problems before Sunday.
\r\n
\r\n
Time to give some lucky kids a few laps.
\r\n
\r\n
Ryan’s S13.5 was looking mighty clean sitting on a wide set of Kranze to the side.
\r\n
\r\n
The crew all lined up and took some photos. But that’s enough of the media day.
\r\n
\r\n
Off to the 100mm event instead. I decided I couldn’t handle 3 days at one track. This NSX was mighty refreshing to see though.
\r\n
\r\n
As did this Impreza on a set of CCW’s.
\r\n
\r\n
Honda Odyssey’s get little attention in NZ, but it’s nice to see this one well slammed.
\r\n
\r\n
In fact the Honda scene in general was doing very well at this meet.
\r\n
\r\n
As was the BMW scene too. Loved this 3 series.
\r\n
\r\n
100mm was a mad rad meet. Will have a full post up on this later.
\r\n
\r\n
Onto the main day at Formula Drift Asia.
\r\n
\r\n
Fredric Aasbo laid down some clean runs, following through with his 4th place finish.
\r\n
\r\n
Robbie Nishida laid out some clean runs also, smoking up the second corner.
\r\n
\r\n
The media crew were being a silly bunch in between as usual. A big thanks to Gwyn from Grip Shift Slide too!
\r\n
\r\n
The judges seemed ready for the main event, as were the media and crowd.
\r\n
\r\n
This is why Fredric and Robbie won the team battles competition. Overtaking is a pretty cool move in drifting.
Which wing’s better? The big Rocket Bunny or the GT Wing of Rob Whyte?
\r\n
\r\n
Runner up – Tom Monkhouse.
\r\n
\r\n
Winner – Daigo Saito.
\r\n
\r\n
We had a media conference afterwards, which mostly involved drinking with the FD/Speedhunters crew. Hey Jarod and Joey!
\r\n
\r\n
Dai Yoshihara was hanging out and seemed to enjoy his time in Melbourne!
\r\n
\r\n
Larry Chen’s face after tasting VB beer.
\r\n
\r\n
And a couple of tourists. Hah – shocker of a photo.
\r\n
\r\n
And before I knew it I was visiting this place at the Melbourne Airport..
\r\n
\r\n
And buying duty free alcohol to take back home to NZ.
\r\n
I’ll be back soon enough though.
\r\n
Melbourne on film.
